Abstract
Wells have been drilled in the Permian Basin since the 1920s, and drilling activity continues there today. For an upcoming drilling campaign in 2008, one producer looked to improve penetration rates and reduce overall well construction costs by implementing new and innovative technologies. The standard drilling rig was replaced with an innovative drilling rig package combining both a full top drive rotary rig and a coiled tubing drilling rig into one rig package.

Anadarko Analyst Conference - U.S. Onshore
featured photos of Xtreme's rigs on pages 24 and 28 of the presentation. (Opens in new window.)

Anadarko Vice President Jim Kleckner, in his presentation entitled Rocky Mountain Powerhouse, mentions Anadarko's use of coil drilling when discussing the Greater Wattenberg Area – slide 24. It is at 15 minutes into the presentation (Windows Media audio).

Here is a transcript of his comments:

"We’re in the process of testing an exciting new drilling technology as pictured in this inset. This is a coil tubing drilling rig that has been successfully utilized in shallower fields throughout Canada. Anadarko has one coil rig operating in the Powder and another rig, commissioned just last week, in the DJ Basin. So we’ll be testing the new technology to determine the effectiveness of drilling with coil at deeper depths ... and subject to the results of the tests are in position to contract more of these type of rigs to further accelerate the program ... and, as you can see, by adding one additional rig per year starting in 2008 we’ll be able to increase our CAGR from 3 to 5%."
